President Bush delivers his preference for US-style values at Tsinghua University, but emphasizes Washington's hope for better relations with Beijing.
President Bush, perhaps taking a leaf from<注1> his wife's gift for teaching, delivered a primer<注2> on the America he knows to Chinese university students, telling them that "in a free society, diversity is not disorder. Debate is not strife, and dissent is not revolution."
Speaking before an audience of 240 Tsinghua University students in the school's main auditorium,<注3> the president said, "Life in America shows that liberty, paired with<注4> law, is not to be feared....A free society trusts its citizens to seek greatness in themselves and their country."
At the end of his remarks, the president fielded<注5> questions for 20 minutes with the young audience, clearly enjoying the exchange. When one young woman asked why he wouldn't like his daughters, Jenna and Barbara, to come to China and attend this historic university, Bush told them: "I'm afraid they don't listen to me anymore, if you know what I mean." He said the Chinese youngsters certainly have an amazing country and he thought his daughters should visit it.
The president told the students he was speaking on the 30th anniversary of President Richard Nixon's trip to China that changed the two countries' relationship. Nixon's visit was a trip designed to "end decades of estrangement and confront centuries of suspicion."<注6> During the years since, "America and China have exchanged many handshakes of friendship and commerce.""In fact, Americans feel a special responsibility for the poor and the weak. Our government spends billions of dollars to provide health care and food and housing for those who cannot help themselves ... Many of our citizens contribute their own money and time to help those in need. "
Bush said his "country certainly has its share of problems and faults. Like most nations, we're on a long journey toward achieving our own ideals of equality and justice. Yet there is a reason our nation shines as a beacon<注7> of hope and opportunity, a reason many throughout the world dream of coming to America."We are a free nation, where men and women have the opportunity to achieve their dreams. No matter your background or circumstance of birth, in America you can get a good education, start a business, raise a family, worship freely and help elect the leaders of your community and country. You can support the policies of our government, or you are free to openly disagree with them. Those who fear freedom sometimes argue it could lead to chaos, but it does not, because freedom means more than every man for himself."
Bush told the students: "We are a nation of laws. Our courts are honest and independent. The president can't tell the courts how to rule and neither can any other member of the executive or legislative branch.<注8> Under our law, everyone stands equal. No one is above the law, and no one is beneath it.
"All political power in America is limited and temporary, and only given by a free vote of the people.<注9> We have a Constitution, now two centuries old, which limits and balances the powers of the three branches of our government: judicial, legislative and executive."
i would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that i do not blame my parents for their point of view. there is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. what is more, i cannot criticise my parents for hoping that i would never experience poverty. they had been poor themselves, and i have since been poor, and i quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes
depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

1、Pride and Prejudice VolumeⅠ
chapter1 It is a truth universally acknowledgedthat a single man inpossession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a manmay be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so wellfixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he isconsidered as the rightful property of some one or other of theirdaughters. ‘My dear Mr. Bennet,’ said his lady to him one day, ‘have youheard that Netherfield Park is let at last?’
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not. ‘But it is,’ returned she; ‘for Mrs. Long has just been here, andshe told me all about it.’
Mr. Bennet made no answer. ‘Do not you want to know who has taken it?’ cried his wifeimpatiently. ‘You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.’ This was invitation enough. ‘Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfieldis taken by a young man of large fortune from the north ofEngland; that he came down on Monday to seethe place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed withMr. Morris immediatelyand some of his servants are to be in the house by theend of next week.”
2、Pride and Prejudice VolumeⅢ
chapter17 “My dear Lizzy, where can you have been walking to?”was a question which Elizabeth received from Janeas soon as she entered their room, and from all theothers when they sat down to table. She had only to say in reply, that they had wandered about, till she was beyond her ownknowledge. She colored as she spoke; but neither that, nor anything else, awakened a suspicion of the truth. The evening
passed
quietly,
unmarked talked
by and
anything laughed, extraordinary. The acknowledged lovers theunacknowledged were silent. Darcy was not of a disposition inwhich happiness overflows in mirth; and Elizabeth, agitated andconfused, rather knew that she was happy, than felt herself to beso; for, besides the immediate embarrassment, there were otherevils before her. She anticipated what would be felt in the familywhen her situation became known; she was aware that no oneliked him but Jane; and even feared that with the others it was adislike which not all his fortune and consequence might do away.
3、The little prince discovers a garden of roses "Good morning," he said.He was standing beforea garden, all abloomwithroses. "Good morning," said theroses. The little prince gazed atthem. They all looked like hisflower."Who are you?" hedemanded, thunderstruck. "We are roses," the roses said. And he was overcome with sadness. His flower had told him that she was the onlyone of her kind in all the universe. And here were five thousand of them, all alike, in onesingle garden! "She would be very much annoyed," he said to himself, "if she should see that... shewould cough most dreadfully, and she would pretend that she was dying, to avoid beinglaughed at. And I should be obliged to pretend that I was nursing her back to lifeforif Idid not do that, to humble myself also, she would really allow herself to die..." Then he went on with hisreflections: "I thought that Iwas rich, with a flower thatwas unique in all the world;and all I had was a commonrose. A common rose, andthree volcanoes that come upto my kneesandone ofthem perhaps extinct forever...that doesn’t make me a verygreat prince..." And he lay down in the grass and cried.
4、The little prince consoles the narrator "All men have the stars," he answered, "but they are not the same things for differentpeople. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no morethan little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For mybusinessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent. You, youalone, willhavethe stars as no one else has them" "What are you trying to say?" "In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it willbe as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night... you, onlyyou, willhave stars that can laugh!" And he laughed again. "And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows), you will be contentthat you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me.And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure... and your friends willbe properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky! Then you will sayto them, ‘Yes, the stars always make me laugh!’ And they will think you are crazy. It will bea very shabby trick that I shall have played on you..."
5、Three Days to See All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time tolive. Sometimes it was as long as a year; sometimes as short as twenty-four hours, but always wewere interested in discovering just how the doomed man chose to spend his last days or his lasthours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphereof activities is strictly delimited. Such stories set up thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings? What happiness shouldwe find in reviewing the past, what regrets? Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should dietomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each daywith a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretchesbefore us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come.
6、Youth Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.
When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.
7、A reason, season, or lifetime People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need youhave expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. Sometimes they die. What we must realize is that our need has been met, their work is done, and now it is time to move on. When people come into your life for a SEASON, it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They bring you an experience of peace, or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy, but only for a season. LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.
Jaguar is an endangered animal. It is said that there are less than 20 jaguars in the world currently, one of which is now living in the national zoo of Peru. In order to protect this jaguar, Peruvians singled out a pitch of land in the zoo for it, where there are herds of cattle, sheep and deer for the jaguar to eat. Anyone who has visited the zoo
Some people thought that the jaguar felt too lonely, so they collected money and rented a female tiger to accompany it. Nonetheless, it did not make too much sense. The jaguar just sometimes went out of its house with its “girlfriend”and stayed in the sun for a while before it came back to its house again. “It is normal for the jaguar to be lazy in this environment. Tiger is the king of forest but you simply put some small animals around him. That is why the jaguar shows no interest in going out. Why don’t you put two wolves or at least a jackal around him?”A visitor proposed. Others all agreed with him and put five panthers into the jaguar’s territory. Since then, the jaguar did not go back to its house any more. It either stands on top of the hill roaring or goes down from the hill strolling without sleeping all day long. It did not eat the meat provided by the zoo staff and has totally got back to its nature.
Actually, this principle does not only apply to animals, but also apply to human beings. Here is another story. There was a rich man who was selecting a husband for his only child among a multitude of pursuers. The man led all the pursuers to a river and pointed to the crocodiles, saying, “Anyone who can swim across the river safe and sound will marry my daughter.” Those pursuers looked at each other and no one dare take the initiative. At that moment, a man plunged into the river bravely and swam at a staggering speed to the other side. All the people applauded for his courage with great sense of admiration. Nevertheless, the man, after landing on the bank, shouted angrily, “Who pushed me into the river just now?”
Maybe the man, after thinking of the whole process and the good consequence he is going to obtain, will feel obliged to the one who pushed him into the river. It is fairly common that disadvantages will turn into advantages and misfortunes into fortunes! But many of us cannot manage to realize the significance of our “rivals” to our success. Generally speaking, many people will see the one who “pushes him into the river” as an opponent. However, if you think in a deeper sense, you will realize that it is also a blessing and opportunity to have someone like that! It is the one who “pushes you into the river”who makes you feel the sense of crisis and stimulates your ambition and desire to strive! You will resolve to eliminate all difficulties and progress to another stage of your life!
In our world, one creature without any rivals is a lifeless creature. If a man lives without rivals, he is bound to be satisfied with the present and will not strive for the better. He would hold back before all difficulties and decline in inaction and laziness. Adverse environment tends to cultivate successful people. Therefore, your rivals are not your opponents or those you grudge. Instead, they are your good friends! In our lives, we need some rivals to “push us into the river”, leaving us striving ahead in all difficulties and competitions. In our work, we need some rivals to be picky about us and supervise our work with rigorous requirements and standards. Due to our rivals, we can bring out our potential to the best; Due to our rivals, we will continuously promote our capabilities when competing with them!
John and Bobby joined a wholesale company togther just after graduation from college the same year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss promoted Bobby to the posotion of manager but John remained an ordinary employee. John could not take it anymore, tendered his resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not know how to delegate and did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him。
The boss knew that John worked very hard for the years. He thought for a moment and said, "Thank you for your criticism, but I have a request. I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change your mind and take back your resignation."
John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to inform the boss $1.2 per kg。
Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone seling watermelon in the market. Bobby went, returned and said, boss, only one person selling watermelon. $1.2 per kg, $10 for 10kg, he has inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, every melon weights about 2 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality。
John was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby。
My dear friends, a more successful person is more observant, thinks more and explores in depth. Chances exists in the daily details. For the same matter, a more successful person sees more and farther so that he can find out an opportunity and catch it to realize his aim. If a person sees one year ahead, while another sees only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365 times, how could you win?
Slow Down
As the old saying goes,“What is learned in the cradle carried to the grave. ” How often I wish I could read a story leisurely and patiently, word by word as I did when I was eight years old or even younger. As a little girl with fervent desire to seek knowledge, my motto had been,“Soon ripe, soon rotten. Soon learn, soon forgotten.” So I preferred spending lots of time on repeatedly reading a lovely story through and through. At that time, maybe some other children about my age thought of me as a deranged person. However, I just let myself do what I liked, saying nothing.
But, then, the quick fix lifestyle today is getting more and more popular. One can not put back the clock. Efficiency means life or death. Therefore, I can not avoid changing my reading habits. Usually, I do not have enough time and energy to read a lovely story word by word. I have no other alternative but to enjoy a pre-digest instead, especially when I am too busy. As a result, I am forced to lose a chance to linger over every word of classic novels or the latest best sellers.
Do not get me wrong. I am not saying every work is worth reading word by word. Sometimes, perhaps reading in this way is just a waste of time and energy. But I am saying that it will be really a big pity when I run into a wonderful work I have no time and energy to enjoy it, that is to say, I can only read it superficially. In addition, some works are easy to understand and not worth spending too much time reading thoroughly. For those works, we might discard the dross and select the essence as well. Sometimes, it is the truth that “You may know by a handful the whole sack.”
Why not slow down and enjoy a lovely story like an innocent child?
