Friend

有困难自己扛,让儿子健康成长

王海鸰1952年出生于山东,16岁就参了军。酷爱写作的她凭着出众的才气,成了一名通讯兵,几年后,还当上业余宣传队队长。1983年,在文坛崭露头角的她被抽调到总政话剧团当编剧。

35岁那年,她认识了一位男作家,两人相谈甚欢,很快就结了婚,可后来又因为种种原因而分手。

这桩短暂的婚姻给王海鸰带来的并不都是痛苦和遗憾,儿子大鸥的降生是上天赐给她最大的安慰。分手后,王海鸰认为爸爸的存在对幼小的儿子很重要,便想尽办法哄骗儿子,说爸爸很爱他,只是在外地工作不能回来。有时,她还会请前夫打来电话,让他和儿子通话。

为了培养儿子阳光、健康的性格,王海鸰经常带大鸥去看解放军叔叔操练,让他感受力量之美,有时还带他看对抗激烈的足球比赛,在潜移默化中激发儿子的阳刚之气。

王海鸰还利用作家的语言特长,在家里营造出一种轻松幽默的氛围,不让儿子感到单亲家庭的沉闷。

一个夏天的傍晚,王海鸰正在厨房里忙活,儿子急慌慌地跑进来,小脸涨得通红,上气不接下气地问:“妈妈,你说是红螃蟹跑得快还是白螃蟹跑得快?”还没等她回答,儿子说出了自己的看法:“肯定是白螃蟹跑得快,因为红的已经死了。”

王海鸰知道,准是儿子和小伙伴们发生争论了。她极力忍住笑,不动声色地反问:“那你说,红脸娃娃跑得快还是白脸娃娃跑得怏?”儿子大鸥小眼睛眨巴了一会儿,大声说:“肯定是红脸的跑得快!”王海鸰笑着说:“不对,白脸娃娃跑得快。你想啊,红脸娃娃脸都跑红了,快累死了,哪里还有劲儿再跑?”

听到妈妈顺口诌出来的答案,大鸥笑得喘不上气来。

生活中遇到的困难、烦恼,王海鸰总是自己去扛,不去增添儿子的心理负担,但她也不会娇惯孩子,反而有意培养大鸥坚强、勇敢、坚韧的品质。1989年7月,单位派王海鸰到九江抗洪一线,尽管她放心不下10岁的儿子,却觉得这是培养儿子独立性的时候,便应了下来。

大鸥听说妈妈抛下他一个人奔赴抗洪前线,并没有闹情绪,反而男子汉似地拍着胸脯说,您尽管放心,我会照顾好自己。

曾经有人问王海鸰,以后想让儿子干什么?是和她一样当作家吗?

当时王海鸰的回答是:“我不会给孩子设计未来,他是属于他自己的。在他成长的时候我可以陪着他,但对他没有更多的想法,我只要他活得快乐,能担当自己的事情,即使以后想当一名清洁工,只要是他发自内心的,我也会支持。”

王海鸰是这么说的,也是这么做的。大鸥从小学到高中,几乎都是在半玩半学中度过的。尽管如此,她对儿子的素质教育却一刻也没有放松过。王海鸰一向认为,让孩子有良好的修养、正当的爱好比考高分更重要。

从儿子3岁到初中期间,王海鸰先后给他报过钢琴、国际象棋、乒乓球、游泳、滑冰等多个辅导班,尤其是钢琴,是王海鸰逼着儿子学的。

在儿子4岁那年,尽管生活拮据,但王海鸰义无反顾地让儿子去学钢琴。每周四次钢琴课,她都是骑自行车把儿子载到公交站,再挤公交车去少年宫上课。如此的辛苦、执着,并不是想让儿子将来走钢琴特长之路,她的出发点仅仅是培养孩子的音乐修养,她甚至没让儿子跟风去考级。王海鸰深知,学过乐器的人对音乐的感觉是不一样的,会让他受益终生。

儿子毕竟太小,不能理解妈妈的苦心,面对枯燥的练习,或消极抵抗,或撒泼哭闹。每每这时,王海鸰都会对儿子进行严厉管教,几次以后,儿子乖巧多了。后来,大鸥偷偷对别人说,妈妈发起火来好凶啊!

大鸥上初中后,再不肯学琴了,王海鸰觉得作为一种修养和爱好,儿子的底子已经足够了,于是便不再强迫他。如今,在美国读书的大鸥重弹琴键,将其作为一种减压的方式,用它肆意抒发自己内心的感情。这时的他才理解了妈妈当年的苦心。

王海鸰觉得,孩子只有良好的修养还不够,还应该有开阔的视野,高远的志向,足够的能力。

儿子读高中时,作为学校的宣传部长,出面联合其他两个中学成功举办了一场校际联欢会。虽然忙于活动拖累了学习成绩,但王海钨却非常支持儿子的举动,因为这可以锻炼儿子的交际能力。

儿子进入青春期以后,王海鸰就对他进行关于男孩、女孩成长为男人、女人的科普教育。对儿子的少年心事,都给予足够的理解和尊重,从不跟孩子讲大道理。

儿子去美国读书后,王海鸰经常和他在电话里讨论人生问题。前几年,台湾著名作家龙应台出了一本书《亲爱的安德烈》,王海鸰看后非常有感触,还就书中的观点和儿子交流。电话里母子俩各抒己见,有时还为观点的不同争得面红耳赤。

与母亲生活了20年,大鸥对母亲的养育之恩感怀在心。从他懂事起就以自己的方式回报着母亲的爱。

大鸥上初三那年,有一次王海鸰牙疼,几家好的医院口腔科挂号很难,王海鸰没有时间和精力半夜起来去排队挂号,而去水平较差的医院又怕治坏了,只得忍痛拖着。看到妈妈痛苦的样子,大鸥看在眼里急在心里。

第三天是个周末,王海鸰早上醒来,看到儿子的床铺空空的,正着急的时候,接到儿子打来的电话,兴奋地告诉她已经挂上号了,让她赶快去医院治牙。王海鸰这才知道,儿子半夜瞒着她偷偷溜到口腔医院排了六七个小时的队,挂上了第一个号!

让王海鸰欣慰的还有儿子的自立精神。2009年,王海鸰看中了朝阳公园附近的一处房子,觉得作为投资将来回报会很大。但算算家里的钱买下来会有压力,不买又有些遗憾,便打电话跟儿子商量。大鸥听完后斩丁截铁地说,不要买,咱家钱够花了,你不要总想着留钱给我,我能自己挣钱。听了儿子的话,王海鸰豁然开朗。

回望儿子的成长之路,王海鸰在博客里感慨:从没想到孩子的成长会如此迷人,儿子从无知到有知,从稚弱到强大,给她的生命带来了无与伦比的充实和欢乐,她在为儿子付出的同时已经得到了超值的回报。

1/ Many Americans are familiar with The Little Prince, a wonderful book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This is a whimsical and fabulous book and works as a children’s story as well as a thought-provoking adult fable. Far fewer are aware of Saint-Exupery’s other writings, novels and short stories.

2/ Saint-Exupery was a fighter pilot who fought against the Nazis and was killed in action. Before World War II, he fought in the Spanish Civil War against the fascists. He wrote a fascinating story based on that experience entitled The Smile. It is this story which I’d like to share with you now. It isn’t clear whether or not he meant this to be autobiographical or fiction. I choose to believe it to be the former.

It is simple enough to say that since books have classes——fiction,biography,poetry——we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us. Yet few people ask from books what books can give us. Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds,asking of fiction that it shall be true,of poetry that it shall be false,of biography that it shall be flattering,of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices. If we could banish all such preconceptions when we read,that would be an admirable beginning. Do not dictate to your author;Try to become him. Be his fellow-worker and accomplice. If you hang back,and reserve and criticize at first,you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read. But if you open your mind as widely as possible,the signs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness,from the twist and turn of the first sentences,will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other. Steep yourself in this,acquaint yourself with this,and soon you will find that your author is giving you,or attempting to give you,something far more definite. The thirty-two chapters of a novel—if we consider how to read a novel first——are an attempt to make something as formed and controlled as a building:but words are more impalpable than bricks;Reading is a longer and more complicated process than seeing. Then turn from your blurred and littered pages to the opening pages of some great novelist—Defoe,Jane Austen,or Hardy. Now you will be better able to appreciate their mastery. It is not merely that we are in the presence of a different person—Defoe,Jane Austen,or Thomas Hardy—but that we are living in a different world. Here,in Robinson Crusoe,we are trudging a plain high road;one thing happens after another;the fact and the order of the fact is enough. But if the open air and adventure mean everything to Defoe they mean nothing to Jane Austen. Hers is the drawing-room,and people talking,and by the many mirrors of their talk revealing their characters. And if,when we have accustomed ourselves to the drawing-room and its reflections,we turn to Hardy,we are once more spun around. The other side of the mind is now exposed—the dark side that comes uppermost in solitude,not the light side that shows in company. Our relations are not towards people,but towards Nature and destiny. Yet different as these worlds are,each is consistent with itself. The maker of each is careful to observe the laws of his own perspective,and however great a strain they may put upon us they will never confuse us,as lesser writers so frequently do,by introducing two different kinds of reality into the same book. Thus to go from one great novelist to another—from Jane Austen to Hardy,from Peacock to Trollope,from Scott to Meredith —is to be wrenched and uprooted;to be thrown this way and then that. To read a novel is a difficult and complex art. You must be capable not only of great finesse of perception,but of great boldness of imagination if you are going to make use of all that the novelist—the great artist—gives you.

All the wisdom of the ages, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us within the covers of books—but we must know how to avail ourselves of this treasure and how to get the most of it.

Reading is a pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the author’s or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.

阅读是心智的乐事,颇有点像运动:心情热切、知识丰富、思维敏捷才能造就一个好的读者。读书之所以有趣,不是由于作者告诉了你什么,而是由于读书促使你思考。你的想象与作者的想象一道展开,甚至超过作者的想象。你的经验与作者的经验相比较,使你得出与作者相同的或不同的结论,而你在了解作者思想的同时便形成了自己的思想。

Every book stands by itself, like a one-family louse, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something; they are connected with each other and with other cities. The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places; the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different times.

单独一本书犹如一个独家小院,但汇集到图书馆则好似城市中的千家万户。虽然仍是各自独立,结合起来可就非同寻常了。家家户户彼此相依,还与其他城市相连。相同的思想或相关的思想在不同的地方出现;人生中反复出现的问题在文学中也反复出现,但不同的时代、不同的作品会提出不同的解决办法。

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody tells you “ought” to read, you probably won’t have fun .But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good time—and if you become as a result of reading, better, wiser, or more gentle, you won’t have suffered during the process.

读书之所以能成为乐趣,只在于你有这样的期待。你若是只读别人说的是你“应该”读的书,那可能就不会有什么乐趣可言。但你若是把自己不喜欢的书放下另换别的,直至找到一本你觉得有意思的书,然后轻松地读下去,那你几乎肯定会乐在其中——假如你能因此而变得更高尚、更聪明、更温雅,那阅读本身就不是一种苦差事了。
