错误能让我们了解语言是如何被习得的,学习者可以通过错误发掘目标语言的内部规则(Corder, 1967)。学习者的词汇错误往往多于其他类型的错误(Johanson, 1978)。“词汇错误”是对目标语言词汇的形式或意义的偏差。被广泛接受的是James (2001)的分类,将词汇错误分为词汇形式错误和语义错误。形式错误分为形式误选,错误造词和字母误写;语义错误分为词义关系混淆和搭配错误。

国内外学者为词汇错误研究做了很多贡献。Duskova (1969)分析了50位捷克的硕士研究生写作中的错误,发现冠词错误最多,其次是词汇和形态的错误。国内学者宋(2011)调查了高中学生词汇错误,发现形式错误是最常见的错误, 其次是搭配错误和词类误用。以往研究者少关注高中英语学习初级阶段学生。因此本研究试图调查36位高一学生作文的词汇错误情况。

一、研究设计

本研究试图回答以下问题:

1.高一学生作文中出现的词汇错误主要是那一类型?形式错误还是语义错误?

2.形式错误和语义错误中的哪些子类型是较为频繁出现的?

本研究中的作文来源于河南省一所普通高中36位高一学生。题目是写一封信给英语杂志。学生需写下他们对假期通宵看电视和上网的看法。每篇作文由两位研究者分析,有争议时加以讨论得出结论。同一篇作文的同一错误反复发生时只算作一个。

二、结果与讨论

(一)两大类词汇错误的频次

从表一可以看出,形式错误占44%。语义错误占59%。语义错误总体上要比形式错误多。由此看来学生所犯的形式错误要比语义错误少。主要是语义知识影响了词汇的正确使用。学生应意识到他们在语义方面的薄弱。但形式错误所占的百分比也不低, 学生在这类词汇错误上也不能忽视。

(二)子类型的频次

从表中可以看出,搭配错误是最频繁出现的,排在第二和第三位的是“字母误选”和“词义关系混淆”。这三种子类型占据了总词汇错误的80%。

诚然,搭配错误在作文中很常见,原因可能是学生尚未掌握词汇的实际使用。从结果中也可以看出,字母误写和词义关系混淆也很常见。因此,教师在教学过程中应该充分利用语境教学,注重词汇的实际用法,在此基础上强调形式和词义。

三、结论

本研究发现,所调查的高一学生作文中的词汇错误主要是语义错误,子类型中的搭配错误与字母误写较多。结果大体上与以往研究没有太大冲突,在一定程度上能够反映出高一学生词汇错误的普遍情况。本研究不足之处在于未具体考察学习者之间的内部差异。

在批改英语试卷时,作文放空白的试卷时常可以遇到,尤其是对于普通高中学校的学生。笔者所任教的是一所三级达标的普通高中。每次批改试卷时,我主要负责作文的批改。然而,近些年交上来的答题卡作文是空白卷,加上部分学生抄袭阅读理解或没有根据题目随便写的,整个年段英语作文得零分者超过三分之一,普通班级的英语作文平均分不到8分。英语作文对这些学生而言是“天书”吗?如何提高他们的英语写作水平?经过几次的英语作文问卷调查,调查结果可归纳为:①词汇量小,不懂得写;②语法不懂,不懂得组织句子;③没有基础,初中英语都不会写作文。面对着一群英语几乎是“零”基础的学生,如何让他们的作文空白卷消失,如何进一步提高他们的英语写作水平呢?以下笔者浅谈这一看法。

一、端正学生对待作文的态度

所谓的“态度决定一切”。不少学生作文放空白的原因是反正单词没有记住几个,更不用说作文了,所以一看到作文题目,脑袋形成了条件反射——不会写。其实在这些“不会写”中,倘若学生的思维是即使我写不好,但是只要我尝试着写,并且每次作文都努力去想,尽力去写,那么作文要突破零分便是轻而易举之事。

二、树立学生写作文的信心

多鼓励,多表扬在作文方面取得进步的学生,哪怕他们的进步是微小的。例如:上次作文放空白,而第二次写了一句,即使这一句中还有错误,也是值得表扬的,因为学生开始尝试着迈出第一步了。在作文训练的前几周里,多鼓励学生多写几句,也就是说,批改的分值与他们写的字数关系很大。慢慢地,学生看到作文,就想着多写几句,而不是直接把作文晾在一边了。

三、讲解写作技巧,套用一些常见短语

高中的作文一般是三段式,在每段的开头可以套用一些常见的结构。例如:

(1)常用在引言段开头的词语:generally speaking, a proverb says,first of all,at present.

(2)常用在第一个扩展段开头的词语:to take...for example,now that , we know that.,what is more important is that,.that can be expressed as follows:.in other words.

(3)常用在第二扩展段开头的词语:But it is a pity that.,but the problem is not so simple,on the other hand,on the contrary,however.

(4)常用在结论段开头的词语:in a word,on account of this,we can find that.,in conclusion,in short,as has been noted...,therefore,at last.

四、背诵一些优美的句子或名人名言

如,在信的末尾,我们经常可以这样写:I am looking forward to your early reply. I would appreciate it very much if you could give me some advice on how to study English better. 谚语或名言:Failure is the mother of success. Practice makes perfect. No pains, no gains. Where there is a will, there is a way. Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.

五、学生作文的赏析与对比

每一次学生写作,教师都要认真批改,并且进行横向与纵向的对比。横向对比:每次作文,教师都要整理出学生写出的正确句子,并且标注姓名——激励其余同学向他学习,同时激发该同学继续努力。纵向对比:整理每个学生每次写作的闪光点,并且关注学生的进步:例如,这次的字数比上次有了进步,句子也写对了一两句等,从而鞭策学生不断进步。例如:有次作文题:为交流生Jack 举办生日聚会,请你写信邀请外教Susan参加,要点包括时间周五晚8:00—9:00,地点学生俱乐部等。刚开始学生无从下笔,后来不断激励与对比,终于可以写出几句:We want to have a party for Jacks birthday. We would like to invite you to the party. The party is going to be held at 8:00—9:00 pm this Friday at the Students Club. 尽管学生字数离要求还差很远,可是相信有了突破口随着词汇的增加会不断进步。

六、制定作文写作计划以及要求

原则上,每周一篇,一个月汇总一次,分为三阶段。第一阶段,侧重字数,短语或句子的套用。第二阶段,学生能根据老师提供的短语,书写一些简单的句子。第三阶段,能根据题目的要求,学生自己写一些简单的句子,甚至运用一些高级的句型。在要求上,考虑学生的词汇量有限,学生的英语基础较不好,因此对于高一年的学生主要是改掉作文放空白的习惯,并且力争达到第三阶段的要求。

总之,对于普通高中学校的英语后进生,英语作文一直让他们很头疼,英语老师对如何提高这一部分差生的作文也感到非常的棘手。但是,英语写作是学生英语学习综合能力的体现。高考中,英语作文总分是25分,有的学生能得23分左右,而有的学生得分仅为3-4分甚至是0分,这个差距不能不说是巨大的。作为高中起始年段的高一年,我们英语教师应该在教学的过程加强英语写作的教学,尤其是对于英语后进生的写作指导。我们英语教师应该力争在高一年就改掉学生作文放空白的习惯或得0分的记录,并且加强英语作文的讲解与训练,指导学生多读多练,坚持不懈,以促进学生写作水平的全面提高。

随着英语国际地位的逐渐提升,在中国越来越多的人开始进行英语学习。学校作为培养人才的重要教育基地,是提高英语教学质量的最佳突破口。但是受到“应试教育”思想的制约,相当大一部分教师在教学过程中仍然沿袭着陈旧、落后的教学方式,比如,片面追求学生成绩的高低,忽视了对学生英语应用能力的培养。再比如,要求学生死记硬背单词、语法和句型,却忘了教会学生如何灵活运用……这些都导致学生逐渐失去学习英语的兴趣和热情,自然课堂教学效果也令人大失所望。

针对英语教学现状中存在的这些问题,作为一名初中英语教师,又当采取何种教学方式才能真正保证英语课堂上的教学质量呢?我结合多年的英语教学经验,粗谈几点看法。一家之言,蓼以蔚尔,希望广大的英语教学同仁给予我更多的包涵。

一、对英语教学形成正确的认识,不断转换教学观念

受“应试教育”和传统教学理念的影响,很多英语教师在教学过程中将学生视为“学习的录音机”,在他们的观念里只要将教材知识点在课堂上朗读一遍,学生这个“人体录音机”就会将这些知识点全部都记忆、储存下来。这是多么愚蠢、可笑的想法啊!英语是一门实践性比较强的学科,更着重于培养学生实践运用的能力。如果教师只是在讲台上照本宣科地读教材,然后就要求学生死记硬背,学生理解起来尚且吃力,更别提逐步提高自身的英语实际应用水平和能力了。

教师要想真正改善英语课堂教学情况,我认为最关键的一点就是在教学过程中不断转化自身的教学观念,对英语教学形成正确认识,这是做好英语教学的基础和重要条件。就拿我来说吧,在日常的英语教学过程中,就不会将知识强塞给学生,而是尽量为学生设置一些教学情境,将教材知识点与学生的实际生活相互融合,让学生在实际场景中更好地理解和掌握相关的英语知识。

比如,在学习“What time do you go to school?”这章知识时,我会让学生根据自己平时的作息习惯,在课堂上进行英语口语表演。学生就会说出“What are you doing now?”“I usually get up at six o’clock.”“I often have my lunch at 12:00.”“I often take a shower at 20:30.” 这类的句子。在进行表演的过程中,学生通过回忆自己日常的行为点滴,不但可以将教材知识点与自己的日常生活形成紧密联系,帮助自己加深对句型和语法理解和掌握,更重要的是,通过口语表演,学生更加敢于开口“show”英语,英语口语水平和实践运用能力也在很大程度上得到了培养和提高。

素质教育观点要求教师不能只盯着学生考试分数的高低,而应该将教学重心不断转移到“提高学生的英语实际应用能力”上来。因此,作为一名初中英语教师,我们必须不断转换自身的教学观念,努力对英语教学形成正确的认识。

二、采用多种教学方法,充分激发学生学习英语的兴趣

所谓“知之者不如好之者,好之者不如乐之者。”兴趣是促使学生对所学科目产生好奇心和求知欲望的内在驱动力,是激发学生不断进行知识学习的关键因素所在。作为一名初中英语教师,应当在教学过程中采用多种教学方法,力求最大限度上激发学生学习英语知识的兴趣和积极性。

随着信息技术的迅速发展,多媒体技术被广泛地运用到课堂教学活动中,这无疑为英语教学提供了有力的教学条件。多媒体教学有着一系列的特点和优势:它可以把声音文字、图片等有效结合,并且以最直观、最生动的形式展现在学生眼前,对于激发学生的兴趣有很大的帮助。我在平时的教学中,就非常重视多媒体在课堂上的灵活运用。例如,在学习“When is your birthday?”这章知识时,我利用多媒体学生观看了一段有关“生日party”的视频短片。其他教师在进行教学时,很少注意运用多媒体,因此,当我说出让学生观看视频的安排时,学生立马就开始欢呼雀跃起来,学习兴趣和积极性也被瞬间激发。短片中包含大量与“birthday”相关的英语词汇、短语或者句子,这就促使学生在观看短片的过程中充分发挥主观能动性,对其进行有效记忆。同时,又在一定程度上提高了学生英语听力和口语表达能力,为学生逐渐提高英语水平奠定了良好基础。

“教无定法”,激发学生学习兴趣的方法和途径着实有很多,我在这里提出仅仅提出一点,还需要各位教师进行不断的探索和补充,为促进英语教育事业的发展不断贡献自己的力量。

三、为学生营造和谐、融洽的课堂氛围,促使学生积极参与到课堂教学活动中

新课改对于“课堂教学氛围”做出了如下明确指示——“关注学生的情感,营造宽松、民主、和谐的教学氛围。”研究表明,和谐、融洽的课堂氛围可以在很大程度上减轻学生学习的心理负担,促使学生在良好的课堂环境下充分调动学习的兴趣和热情,积极参与到课堂教学活动中;相反,枯燥无味的课堂氛围则会在很大程度上限制学生的想象力和创造力,导致学生逐渐失去对英语学习的兴趣和热情,学习效果自然也就好不到哪儿去。因此,作为教师,我们应当对于课堂教学氛围给予足够的关注和重视,力求为学生营造和谐、融洽、积极向上的课堂教学氛围,为实现高效英语课堂打下坚实的基础。

课堂教学实质上是师生之间、生生之间互相交流想法和情感的重要途径,我对此有着充分的认识,并将此思想不断运用到自身的教学实践中。“I’m going to be a basketball player.”这部分知识旨在让学生运用英语表达自己未来的理想和职业规划,因此,我就在课堂上有效“放手”,让学生在课堂上自由分组向其他小组成员描述自己的职业梦想。学生立马就投入到讨论中,学生的主体地位得到充分尊重和重视,课堂气氛也变得活跃而融洽起来,这些都促使学生积极讨论,进一步融入我所安排的课堂活动中。有了学生的积极参与,还愁没有良好的课堂教学效果吗?

前面已经说过“教无定法”,对于改善英语教学状况,促进学生英语水平的进步与发展有很多的途径和手段,文章提到的几点只是基于我个人自身的教学实践经历浅谈的几点看法。同时,“教学贵在得法”,这就要求英语教师应想方设法对自身的教学方法和教学模式进行钻研和反思,逐渐将更多、更优秀的教育教学手段运用到自己的教学活动中。我相信这样的话,一定能全面提高英语教学的质量和效果,促使英语教育事业的更好发展。
